What to expect:
Your first treatment: During your initial appointment, I take a thorough health history, answer your questions, and devise a personalized care plan based on your unique constitution. At the in-person visit I feel your pulse at your wrist and inspect your tongue to inform my diagnosis.
Acupuncture: After selecting the appropriate points for you based on your constitution (usually between 5 and 20), I insert ultra-thin, single-use, disposable needles. There may be a brief, slight sensation upon insertion of the needles, which often subsides into a pleasant state of relaxation. You will be able to rest with the needles for about 30 minutes.
Moxa: This is a gentle treatment where small amounts of dried mugwort herb (artemisia argyi) are lit near the skin, to warm specific areas or points. It can be helpful for a variety of applications, from pain relief to prenatal care and labor preparation.
Cupping: Suction cups are placed on the body to provide a “reverse massage” where the tissue is compressed away from the body. It helps to increase circulation and bring oxygen to the area- great for chronic tension in the neck, shoulders, and back.
Gua Sha: This manual technique employs a small stone paddle or ceramic spoon to smooth out the tissue. It may be used to fend off a cold, or applied similarly to cupping for musculoskeletal tension.
Herbal medicine: I am trained in traditional Chinese medicine, classical Chinese herbal medicine, and western herbal medicine. I offer customized herbal formulas to support you between treatments- often the best results are achieved with both acupuncture and herbs. The cost of an herbal formula is between $10- $40 per week.
